In the 1870s, Bulgaria is under Turkish rule, but the desire for freedom grows. Zahari Stoyanov, son of a wealthy herder, dreams of becoming a priest, reading "Miracles of the Virgin" to fellow shepherds, despite working for Hadji Rusi.
