余る日 — Plot

Three young men gathered at a snack bar. Their friends' idle chatter gradually takes an unsettling turn when one of them announces he's quitting his job at the bar. What will he do once he quits? Three options come up: "grow marijuana," "get a face tattoo," "rob a taxi." It should have ended there, as just drunken nonsense. But later, Kurono (Takuma Fujie), who had been at the bar, gets into a taxi driven by Komatsu (Shingo Mizusawa), a man who collects bird calls as a hobby — and events spiral in an unexpected direction. This short film was shot in 2021 by Hitoshi Omika, who made his directorial debut with the medium-length film "Gifu Yofu" (Stepfather, Adoptive Father), and was completed three years later. Portraying a single day in the lives of people whose fates are derailed by a chance encounter, the film is charged with raw tension and an indefinable sense of unease.
