There is a tactile, earthy warmth to this adaptation that always pulls me in whenever I need a comforting evening watch. The piano score by Dario Marianelli is pure perfection, carrying so much unspoken longing between Elizabeth and Darcy. While purists might argue it rushes some of Austen's sharper social satire, Keira Knightley brings such spirited, lively intelligence to the screen, and Matthew Macfadyen plays Darcy with this wonderfully vulnerable awkwardness rather than just cold arrogance. The misty morning walks, the noisy family breakfast table, and the lingering looks give the classic story fresh breath. It may feel a little sentimental at times, but the emotional payoff never fails to make me smile.
